Founder, Malcolm Lavern Chartier, washing vehicles during World War II in Germany at the age of 18.
M.L., currently working as a milkman, swaps days jobs with his brother Earl. Shortly after, "M.L. Chartier Excavating" is formally established.
Oil field work begins for clients Panhandle Eastern, Sun Oil, Michigan Consolidated Gas, and Consumers Power Company. Performing demolition of buildings, land clearing, and building containment structures. Located in Ray Township, Michigan.
Malcolm L. Chartier hands the reigns of the business to his son and current President, M. Todd Chartier, after his high school graduation.
To expand capabilities, M.L. Chartier introduces its first winch truck.
To meet the need for an efficient and safe option to detoxify and recycle contaminated soil, M.L. Chartier introduces the Therminator.
In response to an large oil spill, the Therminator is utilized to rid the soil of contaminants.
With a quickly growing list of capabilities, M.L. Chartier caught on early to the value and future of Hydro Excavation. As of today, M.L. Chartier has the largest privately owned Hydro Excavator fleet in the midwest.
The newly acquired Webberville location allowed for significantly improved state-wide response times, to better serve Michigan.
The M.L. Chartier team responded to the catastrophic pipeline break in the Kalamazoo River., spanning a total of 2 years service.
After years of working part-time at M.L. Chartier and graduating from Northwood University, M. Todd Chartier's son Malcolm joins the team full time. Malcolm currently serves as Vice-President.
Teaming up with Ajax Paving, M.L. Chartier's first road project is awarded and completed on 12 Mile Road.
The 25 year long initiative, Infrastructure Replacement Project, to upgrade major utilities began in 2012. This program involves replacing aged utilities with sustainable materials to enhance safety and reliability.
M.L. Chartier's innovation leads to Michigan's first off-road hydro excavator to service challenging terrains.
Moving a door over, the Webberville location expands with a brand new, state-of-the-art facility with land expansion pack.
M.L. Chartier's first roundabout is completed in Harrison Township, MI.
M.L. Chartier's services expand to better serve the northern lower peninsula of Michigan.
After losing the entire fabrication shop in late 2020, M.L. Chartier quickly rebounded by constructing a new state-of-the-art facility in 2021. This rapid recovery highlights our resilience and commitment to excellence.
The land behind the Fair Haven Headquarters is rezoned and purchased for expansion.
M.L. Chartier's exhibits at North America's largest construction trade show in Las Vegas.
M.L. Chartier's becomes an accredited Veteran Friendly employer by the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency.
M.L. Chartier's capabilities hit the water with the establishment of the Marine Division.
The Bethuy Aggregate yard ties together the wide range of services offered, including top soil filtering from hydro excavation and concrete crushing from infrastructure projects.
